Take a look at this E30 BMW M40 engine restoration

As a hobby do-it-yourselfer, I have a weakness for restoration videos. I love watching old, rusty things come back to life. Tools, clocks and – in this case – engine blocks, everything is fine. In this video we see how an M40 engine is restored from an E30 BMW. For those unfamiliar with BMW’s engine codes, the M40B16 engine is a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine used in several BMWs of that era. In this case it came from an E30 BMW 316i which is also getting a restoration itself.

This video is part four that shows the final remainder of the restoration, namely the intake manifold and throttle body. However, there are three more videos showing how the rest of the engine is restored.

The first part of this video is the disassembly of the entire intake manifold, throttle body, fuel injectors, and more. If screws are your thing, this video is therapeutic to watch as it shows how this very old rusty engine is thoroughly taken apart, each part carefully restored, and then fully reassembled. It’s even getting some new technology, like improved fuel injectors, to increase power and output.

Watching the manifold get rid of its rust and get a coat of paint is cathartic. The old engine comes to life and is supposed to work as it left the factory in the 1980s. There is something very gratifying about that; take something old and tired and breathe new life into it. Instead of wasting tons of resources on developing a new car, not only is it far more rewarding to give an old car a life, but it’s good recycling too. Most of us lack the time, skill, patience, or resources to perform such a recovery, even though many of us would like to. That makes watching a video like this very enjoyable.
